Chris Tormey assumed a sizable construction project when he accepted the job of special teams coordinator in the offseason.

The former Nevada head coach took over a unit replacing all of its specialists and set about revamping the Warriors' schemes in the kicking game. More regular starters could end up on the coverage and return teams than in previous years.

Where Dan Kelly handled place-kicking duties for the better part of four years, junior college transfer Scott Enos and freshman walk-on Brian Blumberg opened camp as the top candidates to take over those duties.

Punter Tim Grasso has moved on, replaced by Australian freshman Alex Dunnachie. The 6-foot-2 235-pounder grew up playing Australian Rules Football and is a raw talent. He started learning the American style of punting about a year ago. Though he can pound the ball with remarkable distance, developing consistency is the more pressing matter.

The long-snapping job stays within the Ingram household, Luke taking over for Jake, whose proficiency prompted the New England Patriots to spend a draft pick on him last spring.

Before being laid up by an illness, Jovonte Taylor—the fastest player on the team—showed promise as a kick returner last year.

Tormey wants to instill the kick-block teams with aggressiveness. While the Warriors blocked three field goals last season, Hawaii hasn't blocked a punt since 2006.

“;We want to attack the punt team and we want to make them defend themselves,”; Tormey said. “;The more effective you are at blocking punts, the better your punt return will be.”;

There is talent among the newcomers, but none have performed under the pressure of a Division I environment.

Malcolm Lane, a gifted returner, will redshirt this season after ranking among the nation's leaders last year.

REQUIREMENTS:

Winning field position is a primary function of the kicking game. The Warriors need consistency out of the specialists and adherence to assignments from the coverage and return teams.
