BYU-Hawaii wins third straight

Brigham Young-Hawaii won a pair of matches last night, improving to 3-0. The Seasiders beat Cal State East Bay 25-20, 20-25, 25-22, 25-22 after taking out Adelphi 23-25, 25-18, 25-17, 25-20. Losaline Fakaosi led the Seasiders with 16 kills in the second match after putting down 14 in the first.

Hawaii Hilo victorious

Hawaii HIlo's women's volleyball team swept Montana State-Billings yesterday 25-14, 25-18, 25-21.

The Lady Vulcans were led by Fabine Seven, who had a game-high 15 kills and hit .579.

Chaminade loses soccer match

Upper Iowa ran away in the second half for a 7-1 blowout of Chaminade at Saint Louis Field yesterday.

The Pioneers led 1-0 at halftime and scored four more goals before Chaminade got on the board in the 80th minute on a goal by Marissa Faye. Goalkeeper Marissa Minor had nine saves in the defeat.

It's a quick turnaround for the Silverswords (0-1) as they take on Westminster (Utah) today at 2 p.m. at Saint Louis Field.

Chaminade men win

A scoreless tie with Upper Iowa was broken in the 71st minute as Charles Thompson netted what would be the game-winning goal as host Chaminade defeated the Pioneers 1-0.

Darren Smith made four saves to preserve the shutout for the Silverswords (1-0), who also saw eight yellow cards.

BYUH women come back

Junior forward Emily Mearns scored two goals in a 2-minute span in the first half as the Seasiders beat Westminster 2-1.

Down 1-0, Mearns scored her first goal at the 33:01 mark on a pass from Margaret Sekona. Mearns would net the game-winner just 2 minutes later on a 10-yard shot.

UH-Hilo loses on the road

The Hawaii-Hilo men's soccer team lost at No. 14 Cal State Los Angeles 2-1. Hilo surrendered the game-winning goal in the 83rd minute to drop its season opener.

Honolulu QB Club joins Na Koa

During the University of Hawaii Warrior football season, members of the Honolulu Quarterback Club will attend the luncheons with the Na Koa Football Club at the Willows restaurant.

The sports persons of the month committees and the HQC board of directors will continue to meet during this period.

Torres helps Pacific win

Sophomore hitter Bekah Torres had 18 kills as Pacific defeated host Fresno State for the title of the Bulldog Invitational last night, 19-25, 25-16, 25-19, 25-19.

Torres (Kamehameha '08) was named the tournament MVP, averaging 10 kills per set and hitting .325 against the Bulldogs. Also named to the all-tournament team was UOP senior libero Dancyne Kama (Kamehameha-Hawaii '06), who had 22 digs against Fresno State.

The Tigers improved to 3-0.

Wie trails by 5 at Safeway Classic

Honolulu's Michelle Wie bogeyed the first two holes of her second round and never quite recovered en route to a pedestrian 1-under 71 yesterday at the Safeway Classic at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in North Plains, Ore.

Wie's two-day total of 5-under 139 left her in a tie for 15th place, some five strokes off the pace of leader Anna Nordqvist, who shot a 3-under 69 for a 36-hole total of 10-under 134.

For the tournament, Wie has hit 16 of 28 fairways and 27 of 36 greens in regulation. She is averaging 283.5 yards off the tee and needed only 29 putts en route to 59 over 36 holes.
