Viloria, Iribe make weight for IBF light flyweight title fight

Waipahu's Brian Viloria (left, 25-2, 15 KOs) weighed in at 107.5 pounds for his IBF light flyweight title defense against Mexico's Jesus Iribe (15-5-5, 9 KOs) yesterday.

Iribe, who needed three tries before making the 108-pound limit, is fighting outside of his home country for the first time in his career.

The bout marks the first world title fight in Hawaii in 33 years. It'll be Viloria's fourth professional fight in Hawaii and second at the Blaisdell Arena.

A total of eight fights will take place today, beginning with a ladies bout at 4:15 p.m. The main event is scheduled to begin around 7 p.m.

Wie 4 shots back at safeway

Honolulu's Michelle Wie rode the momentum of her performance at the Solheim Cup into a 4-under 68 yesterday at the Safeway Classic at the Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in North Plains, Ore.

Wie is tied for 11th with six other golfers, four strokes off the pace of Beth Bader, who opened with a blistering 8-under 64. The Punahou School graduate carded five birdies and a lone bogey at the par-4 13th. Wie had birdies on four of the five par-5s.

For her round, Wie hit 10 fairways and 15 greens in regulation, averaging 280 yards off the tee. She needed 30 putts, very close to her average for the season.

3 players from Hawaii boost Team USA

The U.S. Boys Youth National Team opened the 2009 FIVB Boys Youth (U-19) World Championship with a 25-20, 13-25, 25-22, 25-23 pool play upset of defending champion Iran yesterday in Jesolo, Italy.

Team USA (1-0) will play Serbia (1-0) today.

Punahou's Josh Taylor, an outside hitter, had nine points on eight kills and an ace in playing Sets 3 and 4. Starting setter Micah Christenson, from Kamehameha, had five points on one kill, three blocks and one ace, and added 23 assists. Reserve hitter Taylor Crabb, also from Punahou, managed an ace.

Vulcans soccer blanked

Macy Usher scored two goals to help Sonoma State roll past Hawaii-Hilo 3-0 yesterday in Rohnert Park, Calif. Emily Lambert attempted both of the Vulcans' shots on goal.

Seasiders fall 1-0

BYU-Hawaii rookie head coach Michael Akinaka was unable to collect his first victory as the Seasiders lost to Upper Iowa 1-0 Thursday in Laie. The Seasiders outshot the Peacocks 19-6 and had two goals taken away by foul calls.

Lady Sea Warriors roll

Sisters Amber and Meghan Fuller each netted a goal in HPU's 2-0 victory over Upper Iowa yesterday at Atherton Field. Carianne Makino's three saves helped ensure the shutout and victory for the Lady Sea Warriors, giving them a 2-0 start for the first time since 2001.

Vulcans win easily

Josimara Pinheiro and Fabiane Seben each had 11 kills to lead UH-Hilo past Cal State East Bay 25-17, 25-20, 25-11 yesterday at McCabe Gym. Katie Swenson directed the Vulcans' attack with 31 assists, and Lauren Tonokawa led the team with 10 digs.
