BYU-Hawaii gets probation
Brigham Young University-Hawaii has been placed on three years probation by the NCAA for failing to monitor certain aspects of its athletics program.
A spokesman for the university didn't immediately return a call seeking comment.
BYU-Hawaii failed to monitor its athletics program in four specific areas pertaining to student-athlete eligibility from the 2005-06 academic year through 2007-08, said the NCAA Division II Committee on Infractions.
In addition to probation, which runs until Aug. 25, 2012, BYU-Hawaii received a public reprimand and censure, and is subject to a mandatory compliance review and annual compliance reports.
Vulcans hire Irvin as AD
Hawaii-Hilo has named Dexter Irvin its new director of athletics. His first official day will be Tuesday.
Irvin held the position at Dixie State the past 10 years. He's also coached women's basketball at Dixie State, Clarendon College and Utah Valley Community College.
Sea Warriors win opener
Meghan Fuller scored both goals for the Hawaii Pacific women's soccer team in a season-opening 2-0 victory over Westminster College yesterday at Atherton Field.
Hawaii Pacific goalkeeper Carianne Makino had three saves in her collegiate debut.
Vulcans held scoreless
Lisa Garcia scored two goals and Shelby Cargile added another as Cal State Stanislaus defeated Hawaii-Hilo 3-0 in the season opener for both teams yesterday in Turlock, Calif.
The Vulcans only attempted one shot on goal and Shanna Brown finished with three saves.
Theurer wins first
BYU-Hawaii first-year head coach Carolyn Theurer broke through for her first win as the Seasiders women's soccer team defeated Upper Iowa 3-0 yesterday in Laie.
Britt Edman, Chloe Ence and Natalie Cude scored goals for the Seasiders.
» The Seasiders men's team defeated Upper Iowa 1-0 on a goal from Steve Kluck in the 19th minute. BYU-Hawaii outshot Upper Iowa 19-6.
Vulcans win in 5 sets
Josimara Pinheiro and Fabiane Seben led five Vulcans in double-figure kills with 12 apiece as Hawaii-Hilo defeated Adelphi 18-25, 25-22, 25-23, 18-25, 15-9 yesterday at McCabe Gym.
Seben added two aces for the Vulcans, who won despite committing 11 service errors and hitting .212.
