California man's death a homicide

The death of a 33-year-old California man, who died July 6 after he allegedly stole beer from a Waikiki convenience store and was subdued by two people, has been classified as a homicide, the city Medical Examiner's Office said.

Humberto Murillo of San Fernando, Calif., died of “;mechanical asphyxiation,”; which means that he was held down while lying on his stomach and his breathing was restricted, the Medical Examiner's Office said.

Police initially classified the case as an unattended death and a robbery.

Police said Murillo walked out of the ABC Store at the Diamond Head end of the Hyatt Regency Waikiki Resort & Spa at 2424 Kalakaua Ave. with a couple of cold packs of beer, allegedly without paying. The cashier notified her manager, who found Murillo on the second floor of the hotel and asked him for a receipt, police said.

Witnesses said the men struggled in front of a golf shop. Murillo began assaulting the 29-year-old manager, police said. The manager called for help, and a 20-year-old hotel guest responded by helping to subdue Murillo, police said. City paramedics took Murillo to Straub Clinic and Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Woman was strangled, officials say

The young woman whose nude body was found Monday in Kalihi was manually strangled, the Medical Examiner's Office said yesterday.

The Medical Examiner's Office determined the death to be a homicide, but it still has not positively identified the woman's body.

Friends, who are neighbors and co-workers of 18-year-old Iris Kaikana-Rodrigues, confirmed she is the victim.

A woman who lives on Winant Street found the body while picking flowers in an easement between a wall that runs behind units at Kamehameha Homes and backyard fences of houses on Winant Street.

Man killed in car crash in Waianae

A man who appeared to be in his 50s died after a car crash in Waianae about 8:25 last night.

Police dispatch said preliminary information was sketchy, but there were possibly two vehicles involved in the crash at Leihoku Street and Lualualei Homestead Road.

The man was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, said Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the city Emergency Services Department.
