The Farrington Governors know a thing or two about good service on the road.
Brydgette Tatupu-Leopoldo had six of her team's 12 service aces as the seventh-ranked Governors swept Roosevelt 25-13, 25-18 last night.
Farrington improved to 2-0 as Roosevelt lost its Oahu Interscholastic Association Red East opener.
Fenumiai Tofilau added a team-high six kills and two aces for the Govs, who have an early-season showdown tomorrow at No. 4 Kahuku. Desiree Kleman added five kills, mostly from the right side, as Farrington dominated.
Coach Reagan Agena, though, wasn't satisfied.
“;A win's a win, but I'm not really pleased with our effort,”; he said. “;We kinda went flat after the first game. We've got to be better focused.”;
Farrington never trailed in the opening set, seizing a 9-2 lead as setter Brandy Vergado-Duclayan (17 assists) made use of almost all her weapons.
Roosevelt took its only lead of the match, 2-0, after two Farrington hitting errors in the second set. Farrington followed with a 10-0 run, including four aces on jump serves by Tatupu-Leopoldo.
The Rough Riders hung on and rallied to within 12-10 after a block by Natasha Kolo and a kill by Traci Kaneshiro. Farrington answered with a 4-0 mini blitz and Roosevelt got no closer than four the rest of the way.
Kolo and Zoe Young led Roosevelt with three kills each.
“;They played courageously, but when you're backed up in a corner, you can't give up,”; Roosevelt coach Rudy Sambrano said. “;We had to overcome odds like that, but the way to start is to pick up your spirits.”;
Farrington had just six service errors and hit a solid .275. Roosevelt had no aces, three service errors and hit .122.
