Ching 6 shots out of lead
Honolulu's Alex Ching shot a 4-over 74 yesterday in the first round of the U.S. Amateur golf tournament in Norman, Okla.
Ching is six shots behind the leader, Tim Jackson of Germantown, Tenn., who shot a 2-under 68.
Another Hawaii golfer, Sam Cyr, is 15 shots back at 13-over 83.
The tournament resumes today.
Omura becomes a UH Assistant
Former Hawaii baseball standout Isaac Omura is joining the Hawaii staff.
Omura was added as a volunteer assistant under coach Mike Trapasso, the school announced yesterday.
“;We're very excited to have Isaac on staff with us,”; Trapasso said. “;He was a great player for UH for three years. ... He'll be a great resource for our players, having played at such a high level.”;
Omura lettered from 2003 to '05 before getting drafted by the Oakland Athletics. He was a two-time All-WAC player with a career .333 average and 99 RBIs.
