Kahuku sacks Punahou

By

POSTED: Sunday, August 23, 2009

The sack is back.

Second-ranked Kahuku registered seven sacks against a rebuilding Punahou squad in a 24-14 win last night at Aloha Stadium.

T.J. Tito, a junior linebacker, recorded three of those sacks on first-year starter Kaiana Eldredge, a transfer from Utah. Kahuku improved to 2-0 in nonconference play, while defending state champion Punahou lost its season opener.

“;The D-line opened up holes for me,”; said Tito, sounding more line a running back. “;They took out all the (offensive) tackles.”;

Interior defensive linemen Veteson Sauni, Kona Schwenke and Hauoli Jamora drew their share of attention from Punahou's experienced O-line.

“;The defense played well,”; coach Reggie Torres said. “;Our three front guys are studs.”;

Though the Red Raiders continue to unveil new looks—pistol and spread formations with four receivers—the philosophy hasn't strayed far from its roots. Kahuku ran the ball on 39 of 52 plays from scrimmage.

Punahou's defense was stingy on the ground, but Kahuku quarterback Evan Moe found the passing lanes to his liking. He completed only four passes, but didn't force many others and hit two receivers for touchdowns.

“;Evan made great decisions. There were some missed reads, but that's OK,”; Torres said.

Kahuku scored on its first drive, a 13-play, 55-yard work of labor. Moe fired a third-down strike to Punga Vea on a post route in the middle of the end zone, and Kahuku led 7-0 with 3:24 to play in the first quarter.

Kahuku's next two offensive possessions bogged down, but a muffed punt return by Punahou's Steven Lakalaka—in swirling gusts—was recovered by Tito at Punahou's 14-yard line. Five plays later, on another third-and-goal snap, Moe found tight end Shairone Thompson in the right corner for a 14-yard touchdown pass.

The Red Raiders led 14-0 with 4:55 remaining in the second quarter.

It was a rough first half offensively for Punahou, which did not get past its 41-yard line until late in the half. That series began at the Buffanblu 46-yard line after a Kahuku punt, and ended with a Punahou punt.

Kahuku's Sauni, Jamora and Tito racked up sacks of Eldredge before halftime. The Buffanblu had minus-7 yards in total offense in the first half.

What its offense couldn't do, the Buffanblu defense certainly did. Jeremy Ioane hauled in a pass tipped by teammate Brian Suite and returned it 81 yards up the left sideline for his team's first touchdown. Punahou was within 14-7 with 5:48 left in the third quarter.

Kahuku answered with a drive that stalled at the Punahou 25-yard line, but Cameron Mercado drilled a 42-yard field goal through a sideways gust to push Kahuku's lead to 17-7 with 1:40 left in the third.

Lopaka Morris, who had tantalized defenders with punt returns—several that were called back by penalties—broke off a 64-yard touchdown run on an end-around play. Morris, who lined up as a receiver, became a “;fly”; back and took the handoff from Moe, who had faked up the middle, and juked two would-be tacklers en route to the end zone. Kahuku led 24-7 with 11:26 remaining.

“;We called the reverse. Our tackle (Tevita Tonga) kicked out and I saw the safety. I hoped I could get past him,”; Morris said.

Punahou tacked on a late touchdown when backup quarterback Liloa Travis drove the Buffanblu 65 yards. A completion to Forrest St. John Kim took the ball to the Kahuku 1-yard line, where he fumbled, but teammate Lokahi Matsuo recovered in the end zone with 53 seconds to go.

Though Punahou's defense allowed only 17 points, it was a bittersweet start to the season.

“;Especially for us seniors trying to lead, losing is a horrible feeling,”; said Suite, a defensive back who played a stellar game.
