The Statehood Day weekend has become a dangerous time to be on the road.

Four serious accidents since Friday morning on Oahu have left two people dead and three drivers in serious or critical condition.

Police arrested one man for negligent homicide Friday night in connection with a crash that killed a bicyclist on Kamehameha Highway near Kualoa Ranch and were still looking for the driver of a van in connection with a hit-and-run crash that killed a 68-year-old woman crossing Fort Weaver Road at 5:30 a.m. Friday morning.

The latest serious crash happened early yesterday morning when a 21-year old woman was critically injured after she was thrown from her pickup truck after crashing into a guardrail near the Malaekahana Stream bridge at 2:51 a.m., police said.

The Waialua woman had been drinking with friends at Laie Point earlier that night and dropped off a friend in Hauula before heading back toward Kahuku, police said. Officers said that one of her friends tried to follow her along Kamehameha Highway, but the woman, driving a 1996 Dodge pickup, was speeding and overtaking cars.

The woman crossed the opposite lane, swiped a telephone pole and crashed into a guardrail before coming to a halt on Malaekahana Stream bridge, police said. The woman was ejected through the passenger window and remained in critical condition last night at the Queen's Medical Center. Police said she was not wearing a seat belt.

Police said a bicyclist died on Kamehameha Highway near Kualoa Ranch Friday night after being struck by a Kahuku-bound pickup truck. The driver, a 37-year-old Kaaawa man, fell asleep at the wheel and nearly struck three vehicles before he veered into the oncoming lane and struck the 23-year-old cyclist, police said. A second bicyclist managed to jump out of the way. Officers said that the driver was arrested and released pending further investigation.

Police said it was the 39th fatality this year on Oahu, compared with 31 at the same time last year.

Akemi Bleyl said the bicyclist died within 50 yards of her house.

“;Even when I take out trash, it's kind of scary,”; she said.

Bleyl also said that speeding and a lack of crosswalks are the source of problems.

“;Kamehameha Highway is crazy. This street is dangerous,”; she said.

Sgt. Greg Lopez, who works at Kahuku's police station, said that the highway isn't the problem, it's the people.

“;It's people that's drinking or speeding,”; Lopez said. “;It's too bad there's not much you can do; more police wouldn't matter. People still drink, they still drive, they still speed. You gotta educate people more.”;

Police are also investigating another serious crash Friday involved a 33-year-old Ewa man who drove an allegedly stolen Dodge Ram pickup truck that crashed head-on into an industrial dump truck at 8:30 a.m. near the Helemano Military Reservation in Wahiawa.

Police said the pickup truck crossed the double yellow line and collided with the Haleiwa-bound dump truck.

The Ewa man and the 28-year-old woman driver of the dump truck were taken to the Queen's Medical Center in serious condition.

Drug paraphernalia was also found on the 33-year-old suspect while he was being taken to the hospital by ambulance, police said.
