Based on the Rainbow Wahine's history against ranked teams, a tie is almost as good as a win.

Hawaii battled No. 25 Brigham Young to a scoreless tie in the season opener for both teams last night in the OHANA Hotels and Resorts No Ka Oi Tournament at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.

The Rainbow Wahine are now 2-20-2 all-time against ranked teams.

“;In terms of all things soccer, it's a good result against a (ranked) team,”; Hawaii coach Pinsoom Tenzing said. “;Our defense was solid.”;

BYU reserve Jennie Marshall had the only two shots on goal in an uneventful first half for both teams.

Marshall forced Hawaii goalkeeper Kanani Taaca to come up with a save on a shot from inside the penalty box in the 44th minute. It was the only legitimate scoring opportunity for either team in the half as both offenses struggled to get open looks at the goal.

“;We didn't have targets up front,”; Tenzing said. “;In the second half, our forwards started staying up.”;

Hawaii found its stride late in the second half, keeping BYU goalkeeper McKinzie Olson busy. She managed two clutch saves to keep the game scoreless and dodged another bullet in the final 10 minutes.

Hawaii's Kelsie Look drew a foul in the 82nd minute, giving the Wahine a free kick from just outside the penalty box, but Ambree Ako's shot went over the goal post.

Marshall got open in the final 10 seconds of overtime, but her shot went just wide of the goal to end the game.

Kristina Ehrett replaced Taaca in the second half in goal and had five saves. The Cougars outshot Hawaii 15-10.

The Rainbow Wahine host No. 2 Stanford tomorrow at 5 p.m. in the final game of the tournament.
