Bouts added to Viloria card

Three 10-round matches have been added to the Island Assault boxing card on Aug. 29.

The undercard includes Zaid Zavaleta (18-5-2, 11 KO) against Dennis Laurente (31-3-5, 16 KO) as well as Jose Angel Beranza (32-15-2, 25 KO) taking on AJ Banal (19-1-1, 16 KO).

The main event features Hawaii's International Boxing Federation light flyweight champion Brian Viloria going up against Jesus Iribe in a title bout.

The card is scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m.

Mack hosts Wahine clinic

The second annual Hawaii Wahine Football Clinic, presented by Hawaii football coach Greg McMackin and his wife, Heather, will be held Aug. 26 at 7 p.m.

The cost is $10 for the 2-hour event, which features the Warriors coaching staff and their wives.

The emphasis of the clinic is to provide opportunities for women to learn offensive and defensive football strategies and techniques.

Lelie catches on with the chiefs

KANSAS CITY, Mo. » The Chiefs yesterday signed Ashley Lelie, a seven-year pro out of Hawaii.

Lelie, a Radford graduate, has caught 217 passes for 3,749 yards and 15 touchdowns in stints with Denver, Atlanta, San Francisco and Oakland.

Wide receiver has been one of many problem areas for Kansas City in recent years. Dwayne Bowe, their top first-round pick three years ago, has spent most of training camp in the coaches' doghouse. He did have five catches for 70 yards in Saturday's preseason opener.

“;I think he's healthy, he's a little different from anything we have,”; said coach Todd Haley. “;He's a long, lean guy with some potential top-end speed.”;

The 29-year-old Lelie said he's ready to go.

“;Definitely. Especially because I'm so fresh,”; he said. “;I still feel like I'm 23 out there.”;

HPU signs Fung and Johnson

Hawaii Pacific men's soccer signed Kevin Fung ('Iolani) and Nathan Johnson (Kalaheo) for the 2009 season, the school announced yesterday.

Fung comes home after playing in 11 games as a freshman for Washington. He was a two-time Hawaii All-State selection and was the ILH offensive player of the year his senior season.

Johnson is transferring after one season at Gonzaga. He was a four-time Hawaii All-State selection.
