Storm on path to bypass islands

Hurricane Guillermo made slow progress toward the Big Island yesterday but remained on track to pass well north of the islands.

The storm had sustained winds of 75 to 82 mph, making it barely a hurricane, the Central Pacific Hurricane Center said.

As of 5 p.m. yesterday, Guillermo was about 940 miles east of Hilo and was moving to the west-northwest at about 15 mph.

Fugitive returns to face charges

A man who fled the state after a Moiliili shooting in May will make his initial court appearance today on charges of attempted murder.

Tariq Holloway, 19, is being held in lieu of $10 million bail after allegedly shooting 24-year-old Zacheriah Eisenberg on May 14.

According to police, Holloway got into Eisenberg's car at the corner of Kuilei Street and University Avenue and ordered him to drive. Holloway then allegedly shot Eisenberg twice before fleeing on foot.

Eisenberg, who sustained gunshot wounds to his chest and hand, drove several blocks to Fern Street in McCully, where he received help.

Holloway fled the state but was later arrested in Chicago on May 19 and extradited back to Hawaii, where he was indicted on attempted-murder charges.

Pahoa gym construction under way

PAHOA, Hawaii » It was nearly 40 years ago that Pahoa students were promised the school's first gym.

Now they are finally going to get it.

The Big Island's Pahoa High and Intermediate schools broke ground on a $8.2 million gym last week that will be big enough to hold graduation ceremonies. Previously, students graduated at an auditorium in Hilo.

Principal Dean Cevallos says government leaders pledged a new gym to the class of 1972, but it took decades for the project to get done.

The gym will be named after former state Rep. Helene Hale, who fought to get the gym built during her time on the Hawaii County Council and in the state Legislature.

The 1,000-seat gym will have hardwood floors, bleachers, a concession area and offices.
