Ocean search resumes for tourist

The Honolulu Fire Department plans to resume searching at least through today for a Japanese swimmer missing off the coast of Waikiki.

Yoichiro Yamada, 29, was last seen by family members about 9:30 a.m. Friday, police said. He was swimming with fins, a mask and a snorkel in the ocean fronting Hilton Hawaiian Village.

Police said Yamada, a Japanese visitor who is 6 feet 2 inches tall and 165 pounds, was wearing white surf shorts with blue trim. Anyone with information about his whereabouts should call police.

Firefighters and lifeguards began searching about 2 p.m. Friday and ended that day at dusk.

Yesterday the U.S. Coast Guard used an HH-65 Dolphin rescue helicopter to search up to 2 1/2 miles from shore between the reef runway and Kalaeloa.

A fire helicopter and divers searched between Diamond Head and the reef runway, from shore to 300 yards out to sea, said fire Capt. Earle Kealoha.

Teen girl drowns in Hope Chapel pool

A teenage girl apparently drowned yesterday in a pool at Hope Chapel in Kapolei, officials said.

Shortly before 2 p.m., group members noticed the girl was missing, and a caretaker found her at the bottom of the pool, said fire Capt. Earle Kealoha.

Bystanders and arriving firefighters performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the girl until paramedics took her to Hawaii Medical Center West, Kealoha said.

The girl was taken to the hospital in critical condition and later died, said Bryan Cheplic, Honolulu Emergency Services Department spokesman.

Man wanted for stabbing ex-girlfriend

Police are looking for a 28-year-old man on the lam after allegedly stabbing his ex-girlfriend in her Mililani apartment yesterday.

At about 2:45 p.m., the man broke into his 25-year-old ex-girlfriend's apartment at 95-2057 Waikalani Place, authorities said.

The man stabbed the woman several times with a knife and fled, police said. Paramedics took the woman to the hospital in serious condition, said Bryan Cheplic, city Emergency Services Department spokesman. A Fire Department spokesman said the woman had injuries to her left rib cage.

Police couldn't find the man in the area. A second-degree attempted murder and first-degree burglary case has been opened.

Body found at HPOWER plant ID'd

The Honolulu Medical Examiner's Office identified the 31-year-old man who was found dead at the city's HPOWER plant at Campbell Industrial Park as Matthew Carothers of Mililani.

Medical examiners are awaiting laboratory results and have not released the cause or manner of his death.

City employees found Carothers' body at 7:16 p.m. on Aug. 6. Police opened an unattended death case, pending autopsy reports.
