Evangelists kick off Calvary events

Calvary Chapel of Honolulu will host five days of special events on its Aiea campus beginning next Saturday with an all-day program on Christian growth featuring nationally known evangelists.

Retired Army Lt. Gen. William “;Jerry”; Boykin, whose clash with a Somalian warlord was chronicled in the movie “;Black Hawk Down,”; will be a keynote speaker Saturday at the annual “;How to Walk”; seminar on “;Courageous Christians in Chaotic Times.”;

Boykin will also talk about world events and their relationship to biblical prophecies at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 26 as part of the church's “;End Times Outreach”; series.

All events at the church at 98-1016 Komo Mai Drive, Aiea, are free and open to the public.

The Saturday program from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. will also feature Greg Laurie, headliner preacher of the Harvest Crusades; Raul Ries, author of the book and movie “;Fury to Freedom”; and pastor of Calvary Chapel Golden Springs, Calif.; Gayle Erwin, author of “;The Jesus Style”;; and Skip Heitzig, pastor of Calvary Chapel Albuquerque and Christian radio commentator. The first Hawaii screening of a documentary on Laurie will be at 6:30 p.m. next Saturday. In “;Lost Boy: The Next Chapter,”; Laurie talks about the loss of his oldest son in a traffic accident last year.

The “;End Times”; series on Bible prophecy and the last days will be held at 6:30 p.m. nightly Aug. 23-26. Christian pop rock band VOTA of Lincoln, Neb., will open each session. Ries, Erwin and Don Stewart, producer of “;The Bible Explorer”; film series, will speak.

Teen harpist to perform in Kaimuki

Award-winning harpist Melody Rose Lindsay of Honolulu will present music from ancient times to alternative rock in an Aug. 23 concert at Kaimuki Christian Church, 1117 Koko Head Ave.

The 6:30 p.m. concert “;Harping Through the Ages”; is free and open to the public. It is a celebration for Lindsay, 17, who was named a 2009 Davidson Fellow Laureate, winning a $50,000 scholarship. It is also a farewell performance before she leaves for her freshman year at Princeton University.

Lindsay has performed with the Honolulu Symphony, on Public Radio International's “;From the Top”; program and for audiences on the mainland and Europe. She was a U.S. representative to World Harp Congress sessions in Ireland and the Netherlands.
