Japanese visitor missing off Waikiki
Police, fire and Ocean Safety personnel searched for a missing 29-year-old Japanese visitor yesterday afternoon in Waikiki.
The man's family said he had gone swimming alone, and last saw him at 9:30 a.m. yesterday at Duke Kahanamoku Beach, fire Capt. Terry Seelig said.
The family reported him missing at about 2 p.m. to hotel security, who called 911.
Fire and Ocean Safety members searched off Duke Kahanamoku Beach for the man, who used a mask, snorkel and fins. Police were interviewing people in the area.
While the Fire Department's helicopter flew over the area searching for the missing man, a 6-foot shark was spotted in the Ala Wai Channel in the area of Ala Moana Bowls. The shark did not meet the department's criteria to take any kind of action, Seelig said. The search was to resume this morning.
