Aloha Stadium adding TVs, activities

Some changes have been made for this season at Aloha Stadium, which starts with the Father Bray Classic high school doubleheader tomorrow.
Aloha Sports Properties has a 10-year contract with the state to provide sponsorship, signage and game-day fan activities around the stadium.
The deal also provides for “;a new vision,”; according to ASP general manager Glen Higa. He was speaking figuratively, but the plan includes nearly 90 flat-screen TVs spread throughout the stadium, including at the concession stands so people in line for food won't miss plays.
Higa is also working with sponsors on activities, including a game trailer presented by the Hawaii Army National Guard. Fans will be able to play video games matching University of Hawaii and other college teams, as well as NFL teams.
There are also plans for “;fan of the game”; and “;kiss cam”; activities.
Also, 18 security cameras are spread throughout the stadium, facility manager Scott Chan said.
The first phase of a five-year renovation project is completed, Chan said. It includes having the bridges between the stands stiffened.
As renovations continue, two of the projects most noticeable to fans and athletes will likely be completed next year.
Chan said he had hoped the 6-year-old FieldTurf playing surface would be replaced prior to this season, but that is now on the schedule for next year.
“;We tried very hard to replace it this year,”; Chan said. “;We're working hard with the HTA (Hawaii Tourism Authority) for new turf in 2010.”;
Also, a new scoreboard and video screen replacing the Jumbotron will be installed by ASP in time for the 2010 season.
An official announcement that the Aloha Stadium Swap Meet will not be held on UH game days this season is expected soon. That will ease traffic and facilitate opening the parking lot earlier for tailgaters.
