Volleyball players on watch list

Hawaii Baptist's Sarah Palmer and Juliana Behrens of Punahou have been named to the Under Armour Girls High School All-America volleyball watch list for the 2009-10 season.

The two seniors are among 383 players from 37 states who will be considered for the 48-member teams named by the American Volleyball Coaches Association in November. The 24 first-team members will be invited to play at the Under Armour All-America Volleyball Match and Skills Competition, to be held in conjunction with the NCAA final four in Tampa, Fla.

Palmer has orally committed to Texas. She is a 5-foot-11 hitter/libero. Behrens, a 6-1 outside hitter, has orally committed to Cincinnati.

Ko Olina earns spot in tourney

Representing Ko Olina Golf Club, Troy Higashiyama, Darrell Izumi and Bronson Maluenda teamed with PGA professional Travis Joerger to win the Aloha Section PGA Team Championship yesterday at Kahili Golf Course in Wailuku with an 11-under 133.

The foursome won by a three strokes and will compete against 163 teams in the McGladrey Team National Championship in North Carolina, Oct. 26-28.

Surf rivalry at Sandy Beach

North Shore surfers will battle surfers from the South Shore in Red Bull Rivals at Sandy Beach on Sept. 5.

Aside from bragging rights, the teams will compete for next year's home-surf advantage.

Teams will be made up of 10 surfers each and must include at least one female and one surfer under 18. One “;ringer”; from anywhere in the world is allowed and does not have to be disclosed until the day of the competition.

HPU signs Mililani softballer

Mililani softball player Celina Garces signed a letter of intent to play for Hawaii Pacific, the school announced yesterday.

Garces, a first-team all-state choice for the state champion Trojans, is an infielder.

“;Celina is a very talented player and we know she has the athletic ability and skill to compete at the college level,”; HPU coach Bryan Nakasone said.
