Pushing Oahu's odometer outer limits

Here are Oahu's top cars as far as pushing the odometer limits go.

We invited you to tell us about your car in the June 1 “;Here's the Deal”; column called “;Odometer Outer Limits,”; and you responded.

We have everything from a Mazda to a Mercedes. Our top car went more than 377,000 miles, while our No. 5 car went more than 150,000 miles. What you made clear is that with the right maintenance and care—but nothing out of the ordinary—you can drive a car well beyond 100,000 miles.

The No. 2 top car belongs to Waikiki's Russell Stacy, a platoon sergeant with the Army. His 1994 Chevrolet truck has more than 300,000 miles on it.

Stacy bought the truck new in Tahlequah, Okla., and has driven it for the last seven years in Hawaii.

“;It still gets me back and forth to work every day,”; said Stacy, who commutes from Waikiki to Schofield Barracks.

Other than a tune-up every 50,000 miles and an oil change every 3,000 miles, Stacy says he doesn't do “;anything else special.”; He also keeps it clean and has it detailed once in a while.

He'll be reassigned to Texas next week (and responded to the column before he knew of his reassignment), but is keeping the truck.

Why is he keeping the Chevy?

His wife says it has sentimental value—he was driving the pickup when they were first dating.

He's thought about selling it several times, including under the recent “;cash for clunkers”; deal, but his wife won't let him.

“;My advice is just to take care of your vehicle,”; said Stacy. “;A lot of people beat them up and don't change the oil.”;
