Four Navy captains, including one who was named military officer of the year while serving at the Pearl Harbor Shipyard a decade ago, have been selected for promotion to rear admiral and assigned to Hawaii.

The new leaders tapped for one star are:

» Capt. Richard Berkey, former Norfolk Naval Shipyard commander at Portsmouth, Va., as Pacific Fleet maintenance officer.

» Capt. Thomas F. Carney Jr., appropriations officer for the assistant secretary of the Navy, as Pacific Fleet deputy chief for plans, policies and requirements.

» Capt. Thomas K. Shannon, military assistant to the secretary of defense at the Pentagon, as Pacific Fleet deputy chief of staff for operations, training and readiness. He replaces Rear Adm. Thomas Copeman, a 1977 Punahou graduate.

» Capt. Elizabeth Train, commanding officer of the Center of Naval Intelligence in Virginia Beach, Va., as the Pacific Command's new director for intelligence.

Berkey entered the Navy through the NROTC program at Pennsylvania State University in 1983. He commanded the Norfolk Naval Shipyard from 2006 until July.

In 1999 the Honolulu-Pacific Federal Executive Board selected Berkey as the military officer of the year for the Hawaii region while he served as assistant operations officer for surface ship and submarine fleet maintenance at the shipyard.
