Moanalua takes volleyball title

Moanalua isn't the tallest team, but Na Menehune captured its second tournament crown yesterday in a one-week span.

Na Menehune outlasted Aiea in the final matchup of gold bracket play in the three-day Longy Okamoto Girls Volleyball Tournament yesterday at Na Alli's gym.

With a 6-0 mark in the gold bracket, Moanalua need to capture only one of its two sets against Aiea (5-1) to claim the title. Moanalua took a 14-6 lead and held on a 25-23 win to clinch it.

Aiea won the final set 24-19.

Sophomore Erin Perez and Ana Ponce helped Moanalua while senior setter Carsen Mata directed traffic. Senior Gabby Matautia, a transfer from Kapolei, is fitting in nicely with her new team.

Kailua advances in Legion ball

Kailua ousted San Bernardino (Calif.) in American Legion West Regional play with a 13-11 victory yesterday in Fairfield, Calif.

Kailua's Alika Ramseyer-Ho came on in relief in the first inning and pitched the rest of the game, allowing four hits. He struck out seven and picked up the win.

The team stole 11 bases and pounded 11 hits in advancing to play either Las Vegas or Fairfield today.

2 to speak at QB Club

Former Honolulu Quarterback Club president John Campbell and member Dick Gooch are tomorrow's speakers at the club's weekly meeting at the Pagoda Hotel.

The luncheon starts at 11:30 a.m. in the LaSalle Room with the program at noon. The public is welcome to attend.

Campbell was into sports marketing while Gooch helped found the club's Sports Person of the Month and Sports Person of the Year awards.
