Big Isle kids can win prizes for art

Children on the Big Island have until Wednesday to submit artwork to the World Heritage Festival Keiki Art Contest. Art must reflect the artist's heritage and/or a peaceful family.

Contestants, from kindergarten through eighth grade, may use crayons, ink, colored pencils and markers to create the work and must provide a brief written description of their drawing. Entries will be displayed at Hilo businesses during the weekend.

Winners will be announced at the festival on Saturday. Cash prizes and gift certificates will be awarded. The event, running 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Mooheau Park in Hilo, will feature performances, demonstrations, arts and crafts, food and keiki activities.

Pick up entry forms at city park facilities, the Hilo Public Library and the Mooheau Bus Terminal Visitor Information Center. Deadline for submissions is 3 p.m. Wednesday. Call 933-9772.

Academy of Arts sale offers bargains

Exhibit features printmakers' works

“;Printed Pages,”; a book art exhibit at the Academy Art Center, opens Wednesday with works from such local printmakers as Lisa Louise Adams, Karen Otter, Kimberly Chai, Hans Loffel, Tamara Moan, Marcia Morse, Marcia Pasqua, Laura Smith and Quala Lynn Young.

On Saturday, Honolulu Printmakers will hold a free demonstration, “;Show & Tell,”; in which artists demonstrate various book structures and discuss creating the books. The event runs 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the center. Call 536-5507.
