Penn defends title tonight in Philadelphia

UFC lightweight champion B.J. Penn weighed in at 155 pounds for his title defense against Kenny Florian tonight in Philadelphia. UFC 101: Declaration will be broadcast live on pay-per-view (Oceanic Dig. 701/1701) for $56.99 in high definition. There are 11 bouts on Philadelphia's maiden card and the buzz around the city has been getting louder. Greg Sirb, executive director of the State Athletic Commission, warned the fighters they should expect to hear anything on their way out of the ring if they perform.

Central Maui loses opener

It wasn't the result Central Maui was hoping for in yesterday's opener of the Little League West Regional.

Arizona knocked off the Valley Isle squad 7-4.

Dragons make final

The 808 Dragons from Kaimuki advanced to today's Continental Amateur Baseball Association West Division 12-and-under final with a 6-3 victory over Washington.

Both teams were previously undefeated in the double-elimination tournament and will meet again in the final at Coos Bay, Ore.

Nakoa Ibaan's single broke a 2-2 tie in the fifth inning to swing the momentum to the Dragons.

Earlier in the day, Elijah Chang pitched a complete game as the Dragons beat another team from Washington, 14-0.

Kailua advances

Kailua relief pitcher Alika Ramseyer-Ho ended a big rally by Murray, Utah, to seal a 10-6 victory in the American League West Regional yesterday at Fairfield, Calif.

Kailua advanced in the tournament while eliminating Murray.

Football clinic for women

The second annual Hawaii Wahine Football Clinic will be held Aug. 26.

The event, presented by UH coach Greg McMackin and his wife, Heather, features the UH coaching staff and their wives. The two-hour event details offensive and defensive football strategies to women.

Kono eliminated at U.S. Amateur

ST. LOUIS » Jennifer Song moved within two matches of becoming the second woman to win two U.S. Golf Association championships in the same year, beating Punahou School graduate Stephanie Kono 2 and 1 in the U.S. Women's Amateur quarterfinals yesterday.

The 19-year-old Song, who won the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links in June, will face Tiffany Lua of Rowland Heights, Calif., today at Old Warson Country Club.

Pearl Sinn is the only woman to win two USGA titles in a year, taking the 1988 Women's Amateur and Women's Amateur Public Links.
