Bourne solid in loss to Cuba

Honolulu’s Tri Bourne had a team-high 14 points, but it was not enough, as the U.S. Men’s Junior National Volleyball Team was swept by Cuba at the FIVB Under-21 World Championships yesterday in Pune, India.

Bourne (AOP/USC) had nine kills, four blocks and an ace in the 25-23, 25-23, 25-23 loss to the NORCECA champions.

Brad Lawson (‘Iolani/ Stanford), who started on the outside with Bourne, added a kill and a block. Libero Erik Shoji (Punahou/ Stanford) had nine digs.

The U.S. finishes the second round of pool play today against Iran. The Americans appear out of medal contention and headed into the classification matches for fifth through eighth place.

Kono advances, 2 eliminated

ST. LOUIS » Golfers with Hawaii ties went 1-for-3 in yesterday's first round of match play at the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship.

Honolulu's Stephanie Kono (Punahou/UCLA) eliminated Arizona's Alexandra Stewart 7 and 6 to advance to today's round of 32 at the Old Warson Country Club.

Ousted were former Big Island resident Kimberly Kim and Baldwin's Cassy Isagawa. Kim, the youngest to win this event as a 14-year-old in 2006, fell to Canada's Maude-Aimee Leblanc 5 and 3. Isagawa lost to Washington's Erynne Lee 4 and 2.
