Trial date set for Bolla vs. UH

The trial date for former Hawaii women's basketball coach Jim Bolla against the university is set for June 22, 2010.

His hearing for wrongful termination on Title IX discrimination grounds was filed on April 13 in U.S. District Court.

Bolla was terminated for cause in April — meaning he didn't receive any of the roughly $240,000 for the remaining two years on his contract — after he allegedly kicked a player during a fall 2008 practice.

“;I'm looking forward to having my opportunity to tell my side of the story,”; Bolla said yesterday.

He added that he'll explore all options in securing witnesses for his cause. He said he is applying for other coaching jobs in the meantime.

In his five years at UH, Bolla led the Wahine to a record of 64-80.

Kim ties for eighth in stroke play

Pahoa's Kimberly Kim tied for eighth in the stroke-play portion of the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship at St. Louis.

Kim shot a 3-over 74 yesterday after her 2-under 69 on Monday for a two-round total of 1-over 143.

She finished the stroke-play portion five strokes behind medalist Danielle Kang of Thousand Oaks, Calif., who went 3-under yesterday for a 4-under 138 total.

Kang and Kim are two of the 64 golfers teeing it up today for match play leading up to the 36-hole final on Sunday.

Hawaii draws Charleston in DHC

The Hawaii men's basketball team will open the inaugural Diamond Head Classic against College of Charleston of the Southern Conference as revealed by ESPN yesterday.

The network also revealed the national TV games in the tourney, played Dec. 22, 23, and 25. All four first-round games and one semifinal will be on ESPNU, while the other semi and the championship on Christmas Day will be on ESPN2.

Last year, Charleston went 27-9 and reached the quarterfinals of the College Basketball Invitational.

» Matchups in the 2009 EA Sports Maui Invitational were also announced yesterday. Colorado plays Gonzaga, Cincinnati faces Vanderbilt, host Chaminade battles Maryland and Arizona takes on Wisconsin.

Rainbow Wahine picked second

The Hawaii women's soccer team has been picked to finish second in the Western Athletic Conference's preseason poll announced yesterday.

Last year's regular season champion, Utah State, was picked first with five first-place votes. UH received two votes.

Players Ambree Ako, Mari Punzal and Chelsea Deptula were named to the preseason All-WAC team.

U.S. falls to Brazil in volleyball

The U.S. Men's Junior National Volleyball Team lost to Brazil 25-21, 25-23, 22-25, 25-17 last night in the FIVB Under-21 World Championships in Pune, India.

Outside hitter Tri Bourne (AOP/USC) had eight kills and three blocks while outside hitter Brad Lawson ('Iolani/Stanford) added six kills and a block. Libero Erik Shoji (Punahou/Stanford) had four digs for the U.S. (2-2), which plays Cuba today.
