Homes escape Makakilo wildfire

There were tense moments in Makakilo yesterday as a brush fire that may have been intentionally set came to within 15 to 20 feet of homes, the Fire Department said.

The wildfire began at about 11:25 a.m. along the gulch near Palahia and Puliko streets. It was contained by 11:54 a.m. and put out by 12:15 p.m. after scorching one acre, the department said.

One resident was treated for smoke inhalation; no other injuries were reported. The cause is under investigation.

 

Hilo restaurant damaged in blaze

An early morning fire at the Ting Hao Chinese restaurant in the Puainako Town Center in Hilo caused nearly $1,000 in damage yesterday.

The fire was reported at 6:02 a.m. after flames were seen coming from the kitchen. The fire was extinguished by 6:12 a.m.

No one was injured. The cause is under investigation.
