Benson to rule on Mcmackin

Western Athletic Conference commissioner Karl Benson said the league will address possible sanctions today regarding Greg McMackin's gaffe at the WAC Football Preview.

The school suspended McMackin for 30 days without pay Friday, but he will continue to coach the team on a voluntary basis. He also accepted a 7 percent pay cut.

“;Ultimately it's my decision, but obviously I'll be seeking some council from other WAC presidents,”; Benson said.

WAC volleyball tournament set

Tickets are on sale for the Western Athletic Conference volleyball tournament, scheduled for Monday, Nov. 23, through Wednesday, Nov. 25, at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.

The Thanksgiving week field is comprised of the top six conference finishers with the top two teams having byes into the Nov. 24 semifinals. The championship match on Nov. 25 will be televised live on ESPNU at 4:30 p.m. Hawaii time.

Hawaii has won the last 11 conference titles, a string that began in 1998, the last time the WAC tournament was in Las Vegas.

Padron finishes in top 20

Damien student Jonathan Padron finished 19th out of 41 competitors in the 100 meters at the 2009 USATF National Junior Olympic Track and Field Championships in Greensboro, N.C.

Padron, who will be a senior this year, finished 33rd in the 200 meters, setting a personal record time of 22.3 seconds.

U.S. loses first match

Tri Bourne (AOP '07) scored five points on four kills and one ace, but the U.S. Men's Junior National Team lost its first match of the 2009 FIVB Men's Junior World Championships yesterday to host India, 23-25, 21-25, 18-25.

Brad Lawson ('Iolani '08) added a kill.

Shigezawa finishes ninth

Honolulu's Bradley Shigezawa finished in ninth place after shooting a 1-over 73 in the final round of the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

Honolulu's Brian Lee finished in a tie for 30th at 300, and Waipahu's Christian Agosto shot a 306 to finish in a tie for 44th.
