Ching scores twice in win

HOUSTON » Kamehameha graduate Brian Ching scored twice in the first half and the Houston Dynamo held on for a 4-3 win over D.C. United in an MLS match last night.

Ching's goals were a minute apart.

He scored in the 38th minute, making a run to the upper right box and firing a shot that hit just inside the upper right corner. He made it 3-0 in the 39th minute after getting a pass from Mike Chabala in the left box and hitting from 10 yards out just inside the far post.

Houston (10-5-5) extended its lead in the Western Conference to six points over Seattle.

 

Shigezawa drops to 16th in Florida

Honolulu's Bradley Shigezawa carded a 2-over 74 to drop to 16th place going into today's final round of the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.

Shigezawa was at 218, 10 strokes behind leader Leandro Marelli of Argentina in the event for boys and girls ages 16 to 18.

Also in the boys field from Hawaii were Honolulu's Brian Lee, tied for 27th at 223; Waipahu's Christian Agosto, tied for 50th at 228; and Brett Komoto of Honolulu, tied for 95th at 237.

In the girls division, Kristen Sawada of Mililani was tied for 50th at 250, 40 strokes behind leader Chihiro Ikeda of Japan. Honolulu's Michelle Chen was alone in 63rd at 259.

 

Reardon, Galapia at QB Club lunch

Honolulu Star-Bulletin sports columnist Dave Reardon and Ed Galapia, the executive director and head coach for Kalakaua Boxing Club, headline the speakers program at tomorrow's Honolulu Quarterback Club luncheon.

Reardon will discuss the Star-Bulletin's “;Centurions”; project which ranked the top 100 players in the University of Hawaii football program.

Lunch begins at 11:30 a.m. at the Pagoda Hotel's LaSalle Room. The program follows at noon.

 

Shoji helps U.S. to FIVB victory

Libero Erik Shoji (Punahou/Stanford) had eight digs as the U.S. Men's Junior National Volleyball Team defeated Tunisia 3-1 at the FIVB U21 World Championships in Pune, India, yesterday.

The U.S. improved to 2-0 in pool play with the 21-25, 25-19, 25-15, 25-21 victory. Outside hitter Tri Bourne (AOP/USC) came off the bench in Sets 2 and 4 but did not score, while outside hitter Brad Lawson ('Iolani/Stanford) did not play.

The U.S. takes on host India today to conclude first-round pool play.
