Kim takes third in final Jr. Event
Former Big Island resident Kimberly Kim bid aloha to junior golf events yesterday after finishing third in the Junior PGA Championship in Maineville, Ohio.
Kim, an incoming freshman at the University of Denver, ballooned to a 76 in yesterday's final round to finish at 285. Alexis Thompson was the runaway winner, her 67—272 finish was one stroke off the tournament record for biggest winning margin; Sarah Brown was 12 strokes back in second.
In the boys division, Kamehameha's Alika Bell finished with a 71—293, 21 strokes behind winner T.J. Vogel.
Hawaii Bowl, C-USA extend
Conference USA has extended its contract to participate in the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl through 2013.
This year's game at Aloha Stadium is Dec. 24. Kickoff is 3 p.m.
C-USA and ESPN Regional Television will agree on the “;preferred selection team”; to participate. Hawaii will represent the Western Athletic Conference if the Warriors are bowl-eligible.
The last Hawaii Bowl appearance for a C-USA team was in 2007, when East Carolina defeated Boise State 41-38.
Individual tickets for the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl are on sale at etickethawaii.com, weekdays at the Stan Sheriff Center box office, Windward Community College or by calling 548-BOWL (2695).
Prices range from $15 to $45. Group and corporate packages are available by calling 523-3688.
The Aloha Stadium box office will sell tickets when Hawaii football tickets go on sale later this month.
Shoji, Bourne help U.S. win
Erik Shoji had 10 digs and Tri Bourne seven kills to help the U.S. Men's Junior National Team open the FIVB World Championships yesterday with a 32-30, 21-25, 25-18, 30-28 win over Belarus in Pune, India.
Shoji (Punahou '08, Stanford) started at libero for the seventh-ranked Americans while Bourne (AOP '07, USC) came off the bench to play in the third and fourth sets. Not playing in the match was Brad Lawson ('Iolani '08, Stanford).
Honolulu-born Joe Kauliakamoa, a Las Vegas resident who plays for Brigham Young, is the U.S. starting setter.
The U.S. continues pool play today against Tunisia.
Fujikawa tied for 14th in Japan
Recent Moanalua graduate Tadd Fujikawa shot a 3-under-par 69 in today's third round of the Japan Golf Tour's Sun Chlorella Classic to move into a tie for 14th at 213.
Fujikawa remained 11 strokes behind second-round leader Ryo Ishikawa at the Otaru Country Club.
Hilo's Greg Meyer shot a 3-over-par 75 for a two-round total of 5-over 149, missing the cut by three strokes.
Shigezawa leads isle contingent at Optimist
Honolulu's Bradley Shigezawa was eight strokes behind leader Leandro Marelli going into today's third round of the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.
Shigezawa was at even-par 144 after his second consecutive 72 and was alone in ninth in the event for boys and girls, ages 16 to 18.
Also in the boys field from Hawaii were: Honolulu's Brian Lee, tied for 25th at 148; Waipahu's Christian Agosto, tied for 34th at 150; and Brett Komoto, tied for 112th at 161.
In the girls division, Kristen Sawada of Mililani shared 41st place at 164, 20 shots behind co-leaders Patricia Garcia of Puerto Rico and Chihiro Ikeda of the Philippines. Honolulu's Michelle Chen was tied for 62nd at 170.
Adams returns to Kamehameha
Kamehameha graduate Glennie Adams is returning to her alma mater as the Warriors' associate athletic director.
Adams, the Chaminade volleyball coach the past 15 seasons, replaces the retiring Erv Kau. Adams was a four-sport letter winner at Kamehameha (volleyball, softball, basketball and track and field) in the mid-1970s.
Chaminade athletic director Bill Villa said the school will name an interim coach for volleyball next week.
Anderson on U.S. team in Moscow
Recent 'Iolani graduate Giulia Anderson was part of the U.S. K-4 crew that finished fifth in their heat at the ICF Junior Canoe Sprint World Championships in Moscow.
The crew advances to today's semifinal. The event continues through tomorrow.
