Clubhouse event to reunite high school football players
POSTED: Saturday, August 01, 2009
A reunion of football players from the original eight schools that played in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu in the 1950s and '40s, will be held from 2 to 7 p.m. Aug. 29 in the St. Louis Alumni Clubhouse. The event was just supposed to be for the 1950s players, but committee members learned that guys from the '40s wanted in also and they are welcome, Mike Kelly, a panel member, said. The games were played at Honolulu Stadium, the old Termite Palace on King Street, and many of them drew huge crowds. The eight teams were from public schools Roosevelt, Farrington, Kaimuki and McKinley; and private schools Kamehameha, St. Louis, Iolani and Punahou. Singer Melveen Leed will entertain — she will certainly enliven the affair and may display some of her fast gridiron moves — and there will be heavy pupus. Wives and guests are welcome. The cost is $30 per person. Coaches and their wives have been invited, along with a few VIPs. I wonder if some of the players' tales about their big moments in games have grown taller over the years. What's more, old jocks don't just fade away; many of them take up golf. That's why golfing on Aug. 10 at the Kaneohe Marine Base course will be part of this extravaganza.
