Woman slightly burned when home catches fire

A 28-year-old woman was slightly injured Wednesday afternoon in a fire that caused $250,000 damage to a house in Lanai City, but her two children escaped without injury.

Six firefighters, an engine and a tanker were dispatched to the fire at 1022 Palawai Place. The Fire Department received the call at 12:22 p.m. The first unit was on scene in five minutes and brought the blaze under control in two minutes.

The woman told fire officials she bumped into a gas line, which caused the line to rupture and gas to leak, Battalion Chief Allen Duarte said. The fire started when the water heater's pilot light ignited the gas, he said.

The woman was able to help her two children evacuate the house safely before the fire broke out, Duarte said. The woman received second-degree burns to her forearm, and was taken to a hospital where she was treated and released.

Driver who tried to run over officer was in a stolen car

Police are continuing the manhunt for the driver who allegedly tried to run over a police officer early Wednesday at the Best Buy in Pearl City.

The driver is described as a man about 5 feet 9 inches to 5 feet 11 inches tall, weighing 220 to 250 pounds, with a heavy build and a tan complexion. He was seen wearing dark clothing.

Police said the car he was driving was a silver 2007 four-door Toyota Camry that had been stolen July 26 from the Date Street area.
