Matt Apana is the new Roosevelt High School baseball coach.
Apana, a Rough Riders alum, was a standout pitcher at the University of Hawaii. He went on to play in the Seattle Mariners' farm system from 1993 through 1998, then took his professional career overseas to Italy and Taiwan.
Since then, he dabbled in assistant coaching at Roosevelt (as a volunteer), Punahou and Hawaii Pacific University.
Apana replaces Craig Arakawa.
The Rough Riders have never won an Oahu Interscholastic Association baseball title. Last season, they finished 3-9 in the OIA Red East—sixth place of seven teams.
