WWII carriers will be topic

Take a trip back to World War II with Roy Baker, 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Aiea Public Library.

Baker, a retired U.S. Army veteran, will speak about the USS Hornet (CV-8), a Yorktown-class aircraft carrier, and the Japanese aircraft carrier Akagi and their roles during WWII. Models of the carriers are currently on display at the library.

The USS Hornet is noted for launching the Doolittle Raid and seeing action in the Battle of Midway and in the Solomon Islands.

Moser competing for Miss Teen USA

Punahou graduate Ashley Sagisi Moser will be representing Hawaii at this year's Miss Teen USA pageant, being held Friday in the Bahamas. Hawaii residents will be able to watch her via a live webcast at http://www.missteenusa.com.

Moser, who graduated as vice president of her class, also is a graduate of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' seminary class. She was awarded the Young Women Womanhood Recognition Award in 2008 and is a volunteer at the Lunalilo Adult Day Care facility. She has received a full cultural scholarship for Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.

She is the only child of Kendall and Sandra Moser of Hawaii Kai.

The show marks the first time the pageant will be streamed online to a worldwide audience. Crystle Stewart, Miss USA 2008, and Seth Goldman of NBC Mobile's “;Entertainment Buzz”; will host.

Poi supper on tap at Waimea Valley

Enjoy a Hawaiian harvest at Waimea Valley's “;Waimea Poi Supper,”; 6 to 9 p.m. Aug. 15 on the main lawn. There will be kalua pig, miniature laulaus, chicken long rice, squid luau, beef stew, lomilomi salmon, rice and poi to grind on while Ohana 3 serenades you with their Hawaiian songs.

Cost is $60 per person and reservations are mandatory. To get your seat, call 638-7766. All reservations must be paid by Aug. 13.

Behind Queen's

The Queen's Medical Center is the subject of Emme Tomimbang's TV special airing at 9 p.m. Thursday and 4 p.m. Saturday on KHON2.

Highlights of “;Queens Medical Center: 150 Years of Moments”; documents the story of Queen Emma and King Kamehameha IV, who met at the Royal School, married in 1856, and went door to door to solicit funds for the hospital that opened in 1859.

Queen's Hospital became the site of many medical “;firsts”; including the first blood test, first X-ray, and first school for nurses.
