Kai Barger wins Junior Pro
Hawaii's Kai Barger and Tonino Benson claimed the top two spots in the finals of the Nike 6.0 Pro Junior at the championship yesterday at Huntington Beach, Calif.
Barger won the title with a score of 15.50 out of a possible 20. Benson came in second with a score of 14.30, followed by California's Dillon Perillo (12.53) and Nat Young (9.53) in the event held in conjunction with the U.S. Open of Surfing.
Huffman shuts out Paddlers
William Huffman stuck out 11 in a complete-game performance to lead the Waikiki Surfers to a 2-0 win over the Oahu Paddlers in the opening game of the Hawaii Collegiate Baseball League tournament yesterday at Mililani High School.
Mark Melgosa went 3-for-4 and scored the game's first run and Huffman worked out of a jam in the ninth to complete his four-hit shutout.
Taniguchi claims judo title
Nicole Taniguchi of Honolulu captured first place in her class at the USA Judo National Junior Olympic Championship at the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida.
Taniguchi won the Female Juvenile B (born in 1993-94) 44 kilogram weight class as the international division completed competition yesterday. Chad Taniguchi placed second in the IJF Junior (born 1990 or later) 73 kg class.
Sasada, Nelson lead Pro-Pro
The team of Brian Sasada and Kirk Nelson shot 7-under-par 63 yesterday to take the lead after the first round of the Kaanapali Pro-Pro Championship.
Three teams are two strokes behind Sasada and Nelson, who represent Makena Golf Course.
The final round in the $5,900 tournament will be held today.
