Raiders heading for Nike China tournament

It's been 30 years since Glenn Young, left, last visited China as a coach for the 'Iolani boys basketball team.

This week, he will return with the 'Iolani girls team and new head coach Eddie Maruyama. The Raiders departed from Honolulu yesterday and will begin play in a Nike China tournament tomorrow.

Young expects to see a different China. “;I saw the old China with horse-driven carts,”; he said.

“;It's going to be a great experience,”; Maruyama said. “;We're going to continue what we did in the summer.”;

Young's relationship with Nike is probably the biggest reason the corporation has sponsored the 'Iolani Classic for decades. Nike is also sponsoring the Raiders' trip.

Manuel claims junior surf title

Wailua's Malia Manuel won the U.S. Open Nike 6.0 Pro Junior championship but failed to defend her women's open title at the U.S. Open of Surfing yesterday at Huntington Beach, Calif.

The 15-year-old Manuel earned the junior title in dramatic fashion when catching a last-minute wave to overtake Sage Erickson of Ojai, Calif. ASP World Tour rookie Coco Ho of Sunset Beach finished fourth in the final.

In the hard-fought women's final, Courtney Conlogue outpointed Manuel. In the semifinals, Conlogue eliminated Hawaii's Carissa Moore.

In the boys' junior pro, Hawaii's Kai Barger and Tonino Benson won their semifinal heats to advance to today's final. Kaimana Jaquias was fourth in the Barger's semifinal and did not advance.

Hemmings gets surf honor

In conjunction with this week's U.S. Open of Surfing, former world champion and current Hawaii state senator Fred Hemmings is now in the Surfing Walk of Fame.

Hemmings, who won the world title in 1968, will have his name imbedded in the sidewalk across from the Huntington Beach pier. He was voted in as a “;surf pioneer.”;

2 judokas earn recognition

Kaneohe's Anthony Kim was named the outstanding competitor and Arnold Toriumi of Honolulu was given the best technique award as the USA Judo National Junior Olympic Championships/Junior World Team Trials that concluded yesterday at Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

Toriumi won the 60kg division as well as a place on the Junior World Team. Kwon defeated top-seeded Kyle Taketa twice in the 66kg division but lost out on a world team spot to Taketa in the final.

Kwon did win the Junior Olympic portion of the competition over Taketa. Derron Maki took a silver at 55kg.

In the women's trials, Honolulu's Taylor Ibera (44kg), Chrissy Chow (52kg) and Mindy Chow (57kg) all advanced in the double-elimination competition but lost. In the Junior Olympic portion, Ibera and Mindy Chow finished second while Chrissy Chow was third.

Johnson, Cadell top Chun's swim

Kacy Johnson and Kimberlee Cadell won their respective divisions at yesterday's Chun's to Waimea Swim, the third of the four race North Shore Swim Series.

Johnson won the beach sprint to the finish in the men's division over John Flanagan, finishing the 1.8-mile race in 29 minutes, 54.8 seconds. Flanagan was timed in 30:07.5.

Cadell's margin of victory was less than five seconds. She finished in 35:32.7 to Kate Costello's 35:37.2.

Record field for Night Doubles

A record 56 teams have entered the 39th Kailua Racquet Club Men's Night Doubles Tournament, which gets under way tonight at the Kailua Racquet Club.

Minh Le and Wei-Yu Su are the top-seeded duo and are seeking an unprecedented fourth consecutive title.

Qualifying runs through Friday with the main draw starting Saturday. Matches are at 6 and 7:15 p.m. with the final set for 7:15 p.m. Aug. 8.

Roller derby, Wade at QB Club

New Hawaii men's volleyball coach Charlie Wade and representatives of the Hawaii Pacific Roller Derby league are among the speakers at tomorrow's Honolulu Quarterback Club meeting at the Pagoda Hotel.

Also scheduled to speak is Aloha State Games executive director Mark Zeug.

Lunch begins at 11:30 a.m. at the LaSalle Room with the program to follow at noon.

Eldredge clinic set for Saturday

The sixth Eldredge Athletics Baseball Clinic is scheduled for Saturday at the Punahou School baseball field.

The clinic, open to players ages 9 to 15, runs from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Registration is limited to 80 players.

Big Leaguers fourth at regional

Maui was shut out by Arizona 4-0 in the third-place game of the Little League Big League Western Regional Tournament at Bremerton, Wash.

Maui had opened the tourney for 16- and 18-year-olds 3-0 but lost its next three games to finish fourth. It lost 7-1 in the championship semifinals to Thousand Oaks, Calif.

Gualdarama signs with HPU

Kapolei High forward Liana Gualdarama signed to play for the Hawaii Pacific women's soccer team. Gualdarama was a first-team league and all-state selection for the Hurricanes.
