Trio of artists offer creations keyed to sunny days of summer

A summer-themed show for the season holds court at Second Floor@Cedar Street Galleries through Aug. 16. Laura Smith, Jennifer Callejo and Maile Yawata offer up works in three distinct styles using different media, yet all possess a feel of summer.

Smith's reduction woodcut prints center on the theme of water and swimming, while Yawata's sculptures feature people and animals in vivid color with engaging expressions. Altogether, it's a rather sunny collection.

Callejo's drawings feature a “;nice fox”;; she says the works were inspired by a song that appeals to a fox “;not to do what they are wont to”;: “;Nice fox, don't tempt the old owl in the tree, stay out of the busy street.”;

» It's time again for ARTafterDark at the Honolulu Academy of Arts. This month's “;Southern Comfort”; is “;one part country, two parts rock 'n' roll,”; for a honky tonk theme. Visitors can play horseshoes, line-dance and listen to bluegrass while partaking of Town restaurant's Southern fare. There will also be a rock-band contest, complete with prizes and Southern rock by the Piranha Brothers. The fun runs 6 to 9 p.m. Friday. Entry is $10. Call 532-60099.

» Local artist Sumako Cohn's whimsical doll collages draw on her memories of growing up in Hokkaido, Japan, and they're the next exhibition to inhabit the community gallery at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii. “;Scenes in My Memory”; opens Saturday, with a reception at 11:30 a.m. The show runs through Oct. 3.
