Driver arrested after fatal crash

Police arrested a 27-year-old woman yesterday morning after she allegedly ran a red light and broad-sided a sedan, killing the 52-year-old driver in Kapolei.

Police believe the woman, from Kapolei, was speeding and intoxicated. She was booked on suspicion of first-degree negligent homicide.

The Honolulu Medical Examiner's office has not released the identity of the man, who was from Ewa.

Police said at about 1:30 a.m., the woman drove her sport utility vehicle mauka-bound into an intersection against the red light on Fort Barrette Road. She hit a 1985 Chevy sport sedan turning left onto Fort Barrette from Kapolei Parkway.

The driver of the sedan, who was alone in the car, died at the scene.

The woman and a 28-year-old male passenger were not injured, police said.

It was the 36th traffic fatality on Oahu this year, compared to 29 at the same time last year.

Good Samaritan retrieves kayaker

A good Samaritan rescued a kayaker whose craft swamped yesterday afternoon near Makapuu, a Honolulu Fire Department spokesman said.

The sailboat picked up the kayaker off Rabbit Island and dropped the kayaker off near Sea Life Park, said fire Capt. Earle Kealoha. A Fire Department Jet Ski hauled the kayak back in about 3 p.m.

Hiker rescued after breaking ankle

Firefighters rescued a woman in her 50s yesterday after she broke her ankle while hiking in Waiahole Valley.

The woman's partner hiked 3/4 mile back to Waiahole Valley Road North and used a resident's phone to call for help about 10:20 a.m., said Honolulu Fire Capt. Earle Kealoha.

Firefighters walked to the woman and prepared her for a fire helicopter. The helicopter lifted the woman with a stokes litter and transferred her to paramedics at Waiahole Beach Park about 11:30 a.m.
