BEDMINSTER, N.J. » She's 17 and trying to make history ... again.
Former Big Island resident Kimberly Kim already holds the distinctions of being the youngest U.S. Women's Amateur champion and youngest to make the cut at the U.S. Women's Open.
Now Kim is trying to become the first golfer to win the Women's Amateur and then the Junior Amateur, an event for players under 18.
“;It would be cool but you never know what will happen tomorrow,”; said Kim, who also finished second twice in the Women's Amateur Public Links.
Kim, now living in Arizona, advanced to her fourth USGA final yesterday via two very different victories at the Trump National Golf Club.
Yesterday morning, she struggled with her putter before defeating California's Jennifer Johnson 1-up in the quarterfinals. In the afternoon semifinal against Doris Chen of Florida, Kim played 14 holes in 7 under en route to a 5 and 4 win. Kim's putter was hot, and she also added an eagle on the par-4, third hole, sinking a wedge from about 57 yards.
Kim, headed for the University of Denver, will face stroke-play medalist Amy Anderson of Oxbow, N.D., in today's 36-hole final.
The 17-year-old Anderson, who lives in a town of 300 people—what she calls a golf course surrounded by homes—chipped in from 20 feet to save par on the 18th hole and then won her semifinal on the 19th hole when Luz Alejandra Cangrejo of Colombia hit her tee shot into the hazard on the 10th hole and eventually conceded.
“;It's not the way you want to lose or win a match,”; Anderson said.
