4 agencies fight wildfire
Four agencies battled a wildfire yesterday that scorched about 400 acres at Kaena Point.
Honolulu Fire Department Capt. Terry Seelig said there was “;no active fire,”; but some smoldering in interior areas that could advance through the night.
Firefighters terminated operations at 7:30 p.m. yesterday and were expected to return at first light today. The department dispatched six engines, six tankers and two helicopters, half to the Mokuleia side and half to the Kaena Point side. The Federal Fire Department sent three tankers and two engines to the scene. The Army's Schofield Barracks fire department and the state Division of Forestry and Wildlife also assisted.
2 pot busts in Kailua-Kona
A Kailua-Kona man was charged with marijuana offenses Saturday evening after investigators discovered indoor marijuana-growing operations in Kailua-Kona and Hawaiian Ocean View Estates.
Vice section investigators arrested 27-year-old Ryan Costello and a 22-year-old woman Friday morning at a Hau Nani Street home in Kailua-Kona. An investigation led police to serve another search warrant at a Catamaran Lane home in the Hawaiian Ocean View Estates Subdivision. Officers discovered another indoor marijuana-growing operation.
Police recovered 137 marijuana plants, several vials containing hashish and nearly 20 pounds of processed marijuana with a street value of more than $80,000. Also seized were two automobiles and $8,650.
Costello was charged with two counts of second-degree commercial promotion of marijuana, five counts of drug paraphernalia, two counts of second-degree promotion of a harmful drug and one count each of first-degree promotion of a detrimental drug and third-degree promotion of a detrimental drug. His bail was set at $33,000.
