Kim leads Hawaii amateur golfers

Hilo native Kimberly Kim is tied for ninth at the U.S. Girls Junior Amateur Championship in Bedminster, N.J., after shooting a 1-under par 71 yesterday.

Stroke play continues today with the top 64 golfers advancing to match play tomorrow.

Baldwin's Cassy Isagawa (76, T-41st), Punahou's Alina Ching (79), and Punahou's Cyd Okino (85) are the other Hawaii golfers competing.

» 'Iolani's Lorens Chan shot a 1-over 73, good for a tie for 37th place, on Day 1 of the U.S. Boys Junior Amateur Championship.

 

Ching added to MLS All-Stars

Kamehameha graduate Brian Ching was added yesterday as a replacement for the Major League Soccer All-Star team.

The forward was selected by his Houston Dynamo coach, Dominic Kinnear, along with teammates Pat Onstad and Brad Davis.

He raises the total of Houston players to five on the 18-man team.

The MLS team will take on international club Everton FC on July 29.

 

Surfers top Alii in HCBL action

Kyle Olasin went 3-for-4 with a double, triple and two RBIs to lead the Waikiki Surfers over the Hawaii Alii 7-2 in Hawaii Collegiate Baseball League play yesterday at Central Oahu Regional Park.

Michael Green added two RBIs and John Brian Murphy gave up just two runs in seven innings for the win.

 

Two teams lead fishing tourney

Malibu Marlin Club and Team Malaka are tied after the first day of the 50th Hawaiian International Billfish Tournament at Kona with 600 points.

Hilton Grand Vacations Fishing Club and Tica Game Fishing Club trail with 400 points apiece.

Sixteen Pacific blue marlin were tagged on Day 1. The tourney runs through Friday.
