Eric and Jackie Walden's Chinatown Boardroom gallery houses artwork alongside surfboards, T-shirts, jewelry, handbags and other colorful accessories inspired by surf culture. A lot of interesting stuff is packed into their tiny space. The diversity of items reflects the Waldens' broad scope when it comes to their involvement in the arts.

Their latest exhibit, “;Stix Flix,”; stays close in subject to their surf-centric hearts. The humorous show is a presentation of posters for fictitious surf movies created as prints, collages and paintings by local and international artists.

Japan's Yusuke Hanai creates a colorful limited print for the fake film “;On the Crest of the Wave,”; while Christie Shinn of Canada promotes “;Fun Size”; with images of monsters bearing tennis rackets, floaties and battle axes riding tiny waves. Hawaii artists Rona Bennett and Rich Richardson submit paintings, while Walden offers up a marquee poster for “;Behind the Green Door,”; a Chambers production, showing ONE NIGHT ONLY! in Technicolor.

“;Stix Flix”; was prompted by Doris Duke Theatre's second annual Surf Film Festival, which runs through Friday, and Randy Rarick's annual surf auction, held this past Friday and Saturday. Also, part of proceeds from sales of the poster art will be donated to AccesSurf, an organization that provides educational surfing programs to people with physical and cognitive challenges.

“;It's a great way to cross-promote,”; says Jackie.

Gina Caruso, film curator at Doris Duke, got help from Eric to launch her first surf film festival last year. He offered up a list of films for her to peruse and connected her with movers and shakers in the surf community. He came up with a list for this year's show as well.

“;Eric has wonderful taste in films,”; says Caruso, discussing how Walden's recommendations went beyond traditional surf films into the realm of art film. “;He appreciates good art.”;

But Caruso says what she appreciates most about the Waldens is their generosity.

“;They're always thinking bigger than just themselves. It's all about community for them.”;
