UH AD Donovan at QB Club lunch

Hawaii athletic director Jim Donovan is the featured speaker at tomorrow's Honolulu Quarterback Club meeting at the Pagoda Hotel.

Donovan will discuss his plan for balancing the athletic department budget.

Also on the program is Laurie Baker, captain of Leahi Soccer Club's over-50 team that won the USASA National Veterans Cup.

Lunch is at 11:30 a.m., followed by the noon program.

Reft starts for U.S. vs. Dutch

Former Hawaii libero Alfred Reft got a rare start for the U.S. men's national volleyball team in last night's 25-19, 25-18, 26-24 FIVB World League victory over the Netherlands in Wichita, Kan.

It was the final pool-play match for the U.S. (9-3), which clinched a spot in the final round with a win over the Dutch on Friday.

U.S. coach Alan Knipe completely revamped his lineup with six new starters, including Reft in place of Rich Lambourne. Former Warriors opposite Clay Stanley came off the bench briefly but had no points.

Parghalava leads National Fire

Lasha Parghalava scored 37 points and Chris Powell added 26 to lead National Fire Protection over PRstore 98-94 in a Hawaii Collegiate Summer League game at Manoa Recreation Center.

Bill Amis scored 34 for PRstore.

Derrick Low and Kameron Steinhoff combined for 32 points in Central Electricians' 91-89 win over Home Managers. Julian Sensley had 31 in the loss.

Waves topple Paniolos in HCBL

A two-run double by Jacob Flores and a two-run triple by Tyler Brubaker highlighted a five-run fourth as the Waimea Waves rallied past the Kamuela Paniolos 9-6 in a Hawaii Collegiate Baseball League game yesterday at Mililani High School.

The Paniolos had taken a 6-4 lead in the third on run-scoring hits by Christopher Burke and Easton Torigoe. Three Waves pitchers combined to limit the Paniolos to five hits after that.

Also yesterday, the Oahu Paddlers edged the Kauai Menehune 5-4, scoring the winning run on an error with no outs in the bottom of the ninth.

And the Waikiki Surfers rode a six-run second—highlighted by Kevin Grove's two-run single—to top the Hawaii Alii 8-3.
