Oahu man held in burglary attempt

A 46-year-old Kaneohe man was arrested Tuesday in connection with a South Kohala burglary while the resident was home, Big Island police said.

The 46-year-old resident found a man on the second floor of his home, police said. The man fled as the homeowner approached him and chased him outside.

While the homeowner was calling police, another man knocked the phone out of his hand and then got into a white van that drove off, police said.

Officers stopped the van and found four door-to-door salespeople inside, including the man identified as the suspected burglar.

All four were arrested on suspicion of attempted burglary, but three—a Honolulu woman, 23, a Kailua-Kona man, 24, and a California man, 25—were released pending investigation.

Man allegedly uses SUV as a weapon

Police arrested an 18-year-old Palolo man on Thursday for allegedly injuring a man critically by crashing his sport utility vehicle into him during a fight in Kahala.

The man was booked on suspicion of second-degree attempted murder.

At 12:05 a.m. police responded to a large fight between two groups of men in the parking lot of a Kahala restaurant.

The suspect hit the 19-year-old victim with the SUV and then fled the scene, police said. The victim was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Homeless man is attacked with knife

Police are looking for a suspect in an attempted-murder case who allegedly slashed a 51-year-old man who had been sleeping on a bench near North Nimitz Highway and Puuhale Road on Tuesday night.

Police said the man was sleeping on a bench at a school when another man approached him and asked if he was alone. The victim said he was alone, and the suspect began slashing and stabbing him with a knife, police said.

The victim received numerous cuts to his neck and body, and ran into the street and collapsed, police said.

Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the city Emergency Services Department, said paramedics responded to the call at 9:17 p.m. and stabilized the man.

The victim, who had multiple stab wounds, was taken to a hospital in serious condition. He improved later to stable condition, Cheplic added.
