Leaheys out the door at 1500-AM

Father-and-son duo Jim and Kanoa Leahey broadcasted their final “;Leahey and Leahey Show”; for 1500-AM on July 10.

The Leaheys join Rob DeMello as three of 1500's prominent local media figures to leave the station. DeMello did his final broadcast of “;The Rob and Russ Show”; on Thursday.

“;We thank all the guys at AM 1500 and (general manager) John Aeto,”; Kanoa Leahey said. “;They did a lot for us, but it's just one of those things where we're trying to preserve a certain element of our off-air lifestyles.”;

PacWest commissioner Bob Hogue will replace DeMello and co-host a show on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 6 to 9 a.m. with Russell Yamanoha.

The Leaheys will continue to do their weekly TV show for KHET.

Ex-Wahine help Australia win

Former Hawaii All-American Stacey Porter went 3-for-3 and drove in two runs as Australia defeated the Netherlands 6-1 yesterday in the World Cup of Softball in Oklahoma City.

Clare Warwick, who finished her career at UH last spring, stole home in the third inning to give Australia (2-1) the lead for good at 2-1. Also on the roster are former Rainbow Wahine Justine Smethurst and incoming UH freshman pitcher Kaia Parnaby.

Stanley leads U.S. to volleyball win

Two-time Olympian Clay Stanley put down a team-high 14 kills to help the U.S. to a 25-21, 32-30, 31-29 victory over the Netherlands last night in a FIVB World League volleyball match in Wichita, Kan.

The former opposite for Hawaii and Kaiser graduate added two blocks and two aces for the U.S. (8-3), which clinched a spot in the final round of the tournament in Serbia by winning its pool.

Scott's team 2-0 at AVP tourney

Former Hawaii volleyball player Sean Scott and partner John Hyden won both of their matches as the main draw of the AVP Manhattan Beach (Calif.) Open began yesterday.

Scott and Hyden, the top seeds, advanced to today's third round of the championship bracket.

Also winning both matches were former Warrior Hans Stolfus, teaming with Anthony Medel, and Punahou graduate Kevin Wong, teaming with Matt Olson.

Staying alive in the contenders bracket of the double-elimination event were former Hawaii players Albert Hannemann and Eyal Zimet. Not making it into the main draw was Seabury Hall product Corey Spence, who lost in the second round of qualifying with partner Nathan Cumme.

Ah Mow-Santos headlines clinic

Former Hawaii All-America setter Robyn Ah Mow-Santos, a three-time Olympian, is the featured clinician at the Extreme Fitness Club Olympic Clinic for Girls later this month.

The clinic, set for Thursday through next Saturday, features sessions for ages 8 through 14 and 15 through 18 at Radford High. The cost is $125 by Tuesday.

Other clinicians include former Rainbow Wahine players Heidi Ilustre-Boatright and Hedder Ilustre, and All-Americans Fiona Nepo-Fonoti (Nebraska) and Tanya Fuamatu-Anderson (Hawaii-Hilo).

Corpuz fourth at Junior Worlds

Kapolei's Allisen Corpuz placed fourth at the Callaway Junior World Golf Championships, the highest finish among the Hawaii contingent of 43.

Corpuz carded a 54-hole 221 in the girls 11-12 age group, eight behind winner Marijosse Navarro of Mexico.

The other top-10 finishers from Hawaii were Alina Ching of Honolulu, tying for ninth in girls 15-17, and Kyosuke Hara, also of Honolulu, tying for sixth in boys 9-10.

Hilo's Kawazoe transfers to HPU

Kiley Kawazoe, a 2007 Hilo graduate, has signed to play baseball for Hawaii Pacific.

A first baseman-designated hitter, Kawazoe is a transfer from Merced (Calif.) College, where he helped the Blue Devils to a 36-10 record last season.

Sea Warriors sign 2 in soccer

The Hawaii Pacific women's soccer team added recruits Shelby Moriguchi and Mairead Bretney for the upcoming season.

Moriguchi, a Kamehameha graduate, is a sophomore transfer from Idaho. She started 14 matches for the Lady Vandals last season.

Moriguchi will be reunited with her high school and club coach Michele Nagamine, who is entering her second season with the Sea Warriors. The Warriors won three state championships in Moriguchi's four varsity seasons, and her Leahi '90 team won consecutive state titles under Nagamine at Leahi Soccer Club.

Also joining the Sea Warriors is Bretney, a freshman midfielder who played at Our Lady of Peace in San Diego.

Dinner fetes UHH's Perreira

A retirement dinner for Hawaii-Hilo softball coach Callen Perreira is scheduled for Aug. 1 in the UHH campus center dining room.

Tickets are $25 for adults and $12.50 for children, and available at the UHH athletic office. Doors open at 4 p.m. for no-host cocktails, followed by dinner at 5:30 p.m.

Perreira is stepping down after 20 years with the Vulcans, compiling a 581-344-3 record with 17 consecutive winning seasons and 18 overall.
