2 golfers advance at Public Links

Sean Maekawa and Ryan Perez were among the 64 golfers to advance to today's match-play portion of the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship at Norman, Okla.

Maekawa, from Paauilo, carded 74—146 yesterday to tie for 23rd with eight others at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club. Perez, a former University of Hawaii golfer, shot 75—148 to share 46th with 10 others.

Failing to make the cut was Kula's Stephen Zane (80—159).

Canada's Nick Taylor earned medalist honors at 6-under 136. Match play continues through Saturday.

QB Higgins on Payton watch list

Former Saint Louis School quarterback Cameron Higgins, the quarterback for Weber State, has been named to the Walter Payton Award watch list, the top award in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision.

As a sophomore last season, Higgins set single-season school records in passing yards (4,460) and touchdowns (36). He was sixth in the Payton Award balloting last season.

UH signs 2 in men's tennis

Tennessee transfer Jeremy Tweedt and Dmytro Kovalyov of the Ukraine have signed to play for the Hawaii men's tennis team.

Tweedt, a French national, had a 24-12 singles record for the Vols in two seasons. Kovalyov is an incoming freshman.

Paniolos stop Aliis in HCBL

Easton Torigoe drove in three runs, two on a double in the third, to help the Kamuela Paniolos hold off the Hawaii Aliis 10-7 in a Hawaii Collegiate Baseball League game at Central Oahu Regional Park yesterday.

Movers take 2 against Osaka

Lyle Kitagawa accounted for all of the Hawaii Island Movers' runs in a 4-1 victory over Osaka Gakuin in Japan last week.

Kitagawa had two two-run home runs, the first in the top of the second, giving the Movers the lead for good. He added another two-run shot in the fourth.

The Movers also hung on to beat Osaka Gakuin 4-3. Kyle Kanaeholo's two-out, bases-loaded single brought in two runs in a three-run sixth. In a third contest, Osaka Gakuin scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth in holding off the Movers 4-3.

Maui Invitational tickets available

All-session tickets for the Maui Invitational basketball tournament are available through Hui 'Ahinahina, the Chaminade booster club.

The Nov. 23-25 tournament at the Lahaina Civic Center features Arizona, Cincinnati, Colorado, Gonzaga, Maryland, Vanderbilt, Wisconsin and host Chaminade. Prices for the 12-ticket package begin at $500.

Surfers ousted from ASP event

The last of Hawaii's surfers were eliminated in yesterday's second round of the Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay in South Africa.

Roy Powers was eliminated by Bobby Martinez of the U.S., 15.83 to 7.50. Australian Kieren Perrow ousted Kekoa Bacalso, 13.10 to 10.87.

Reigning ASP world champion Kelly Slater of the U.S. had a historic day yesterday, with four rides over 9.0, to advance to today's final.

Kauai races near capacity entries

Some 200 spots remain for the Kauai Marathon and Half-Marathon, scheduled for Sept. 6.

The combined limit for the two races is 1,500. Entries must be postmarked by Aug. 1 or submitted online by Aug. 20.
