Wahiawa crash victim is identified

A man who died yesterday in a crash in Wahiawa was identified yesterday by the city Medical Examiner's Office as Richard Corber, 60, of Wahiawa.

Corber was driving a 1969 Volkswagen Beetle on California Avenue near Makaweo Avenue when he reportedly lost control of his car, which then clipped a parked truck and struck a utility pole, police said.

The accident occurred at about 9:45 a.m. yesterday.

Corber was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:08 a.m., said Bryan Cheplic, city Emergency Services Department spokesman.

The truck was unoccupied, but a worker was climbing into an elevating bucket at the rear of the truck at the time of the crash, police said. The worker was uninjured.

This was the 33rd Oahu traffic fatality so far this year, compared with 25 at the same time last year.

Avocado picker was Kaneohe man

A 48-year-old Kaneohe man who was electrocuted while picking avocados Wednesday was identified yesterday by the city Medical Examiner's Office as George De Costa III.

The office determined De Costa died accidentally from high-voltage electrocution.

Fire personnel found De Costa lifeless in a brush area near Windward Community College with a metal pole touching a power line.

Hiker lost on Mauna Loa rescued

Big Island fire personnel rescued a New Jersey woman late Thursday night who had gone hiking on Mauna Loa with her boyfriend and got separated.

The couple had gotten off the designated trail and then got lost, fire officials said.

The Fire Department was called at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

The 26-year-old man was able to hike down on his own to the Mauna Loa Observatory parking lot, which is at the 11,500-foot level.

The fire helicopter crew located but was unable to pick up his 31-year-old girlfriend due to darkness, so helicopter personnel plotted the coordinates on GPS for the ground crew to find her.

The ground crew rescued the woman at about 11:30 p.m.

The couple were cold but in good condition and did not need medical assistance, the Fire Department said.

Police arrest 2 in Manoa robbery

Police arrested two men who allegedly robbed a Manoa store in June, taking cases of beer and liquor.

The suspects, ages 18 and 19, were being held at Oahu Community Correctional Center for unrelated charges when they were arrested Thursday, police said.

Police said the robbery occurred at 8:55 p.m. June 23 when four males wearing hoodies and bandannas entered the store and removed several cases of beer and hard liquor without paying.

One of the suspects told a 39-year-old man and a 48-year-old woman to get down on the ground and not to look at them, while gesturing that he had a weapon, police said.

The two men were arrested on suspicion of second-degree robbery.
