Sean Shigematsu approached the All Poly Camp looking for an “;eye-opening”; experience.

Turned out, the Kapaa lineman was among those who drew the gaze of the coaches in attendance.

About a week after the camp at Kapiolani Park closed, Shigematsu accepted a scholarship offer to join the Hawaii football team's 2010 recruiting class.

“;I was honored because I've been a pretty big fan,”; Shigematsu said.

Kapaa coach Kelii Morgado said Shigematsu (6-foot-5, 230 pounds) will start at right tackle and play some defensive end in his senior season.

Morgado said Utah State had shown interest in Shigematsu before last week's camp, but “;UH was what he wanted.”;

“;He went (to the camp) knowing it was a big opportunity and did a great job,”; Morgado said.

“;The good thing is he doesn't have to play the (recruiting) game in the fall. He can focus on his academics and football.”;

Shigematsu said he entered the camp looking to “;get an eye-opener on what was out there.”;

But coming from Kauai, he was also hoping to enhance his chances of earning a shot to play college football, as his father, Delroy, did at UNLV.

“;That was the main thing, get some exposure and follow in my dad's footsteps,”; Shigematsu said.

Shigematsu also plays basketball and volleyball at Kapaa and may not have topped out on his growth chart just yet.

“;The doctor said I'm still growing,”; he said.

“;He's got a real good base and he has the frame to carry more weight,”; Morgado said.
