Cyr eliminated at PNGA amateur

Maui's Sam Cyr was eliminated in the round of 32 at yesterday's Pacific Northwest Men's Amateur Tournament at DuPont, Wash.

The third-seeded Cyr, from Makawao, lost to David Fern of Spokane, Wash., 1 up on The Home Course.

The King Kekaulike graduate and four-time All-American at Point Loma (Calif.) Nazarene is planning to turn pro at the end of summer.

Alfa Romeo on record voyage

Alfa Romeo is on track to break the monohull record set by Morning Glory in the 2005 Transpacific Yacht Race.

Alfa Romeo has been averaging 16.5 knots, 2 knots faster than Morning Glory. The supermaxi, skippered by Neville Crichton, sailed 431 nautical miles over a 24-hour period that ended yesterday morning, breaking the race record.

The first yachts in the 2,225-mile race left Los Angeles June 30. The first is expected to arrive next week at the Ala Wai Harbor.

Volleyball camp scheduled at UH

A youth volleyball skills camp, headed by new Hawaii men's coach Charlie Wade, starts Tuesday at UH.

The camp is open to boys and girls, entering fourth grade through graduating high school seniors, and runs from 1 to 5 p.m. daily through Friday. The cost is $150 with group rates available.

Kansai edges Island Movers

Kansai used two errors to score the winning run in the bottom of the ninth and hand the Hawaii Island Movers a 2-1 loss at Kwansei Stadium in Japan.

Earlier this week, the Movers and Kansai played to a 0-0 tie in a pitchers' duel at Toyonaka Stadium.

Service today for UHH's Manley

The funeral service for Hawaii-Hilo men's basketball assistant Hamilton Manley is at 5 p.m. today at the UHH gym.

Manley, 64, died last week in an apparent drowning in Puna. He also coached at Waiakea as well as for age-group teams.

Tinman needs race volunteers

Course marshals and transition area helpers are among the volunteer positions still needed for the 31st Tinman Triathlon on July 26.
