Outrigger fifth at Junior Olympics

Outrigger Canoe Club lost to Epic of San Diego yesterday 25-22, 22-25, 15-11, finishing tied for fifth in the 17 Open division at the USA Volleyball Boys Junior Olympics in Atlanta.

Setter Taylor Crabb, an incoming senior at Punahou, was named to the all-tournament team for Outrigger (7-2).

Ku'Ikahi (7-3) lost in the quarterfinals of the bronze bracket to Ultimate Gold of Florida, 25-20, 14-25, 15-13, to share 15th.

Cyr advances in match play

Third-seeded Sam Cyr of Maui defeated Carl Smith IV of Laguna Beach, Calif., 2 and 1 to advance to today's round of 32 in the Pacific Northwest Golf Association Men's Amateur Championship in Dupont, Wash.

Cyr, a King Kekaulike graduate, faces No. 30 David Fern of Spokane, Wash., this morning, with the winner advancing to the afternoon round of 16 at The Home Course.

3 Wahine help Canada into semi

University of Hawaii water polo players Saara Majuri and Monika Eggens each scored three goals to help Canada defeat Australia 10-8 in a quarterfinal of the FISU World University Games in Belgrade, Serbia.

Another Rainbow Wahine, goalie Serena Bredin, stopped seven shots. The victory lifts Canada into today's semifinals against China.

Waves roll past Menehunes

Right fielder Eric Semeniuk drove in five runs, including three on a bases-loaded triple in the ninth, to pace the Waimea Waves over the Kauai Menehunes 13-2 in a Hawaii Collegiate Baseball League game yesterday at Mililani High School.

Semeniuk's blast highlighted a seven-run outburst by the Waves that included a run-scoring double by third baseman Case Miyahira.

Also yesterday, the Kamuela Paniolos scored 13 runs in the first three innings en route to a 16-9 win over the Waikiki Surfers. Shortstop Graham Martin drove in three runs for the Paniolos.

HPU signs 2 in men's soccer

Recent Kamehameha graduate Kimo Komomua and Mike Moloney, a transfer from Maine, have signed to play soccer for Hawaii Pacific.

Komomua was an All-Interscholastic League of Honolulu selection for the Warriors, helping them to the 2008 state title as a junior. That season, he scored a league-high 12 goals.

Moloney started 11 games last season for the Black Bears as an midfielder. As a freshman at Phoenix College, he helped the Bears to the semifinals of the junior college national tournament.
