Passenger, 18, is killed, driver is arrested in crash

An 18-year-old woman was killed last night after the compact car in which she was a passenger ran a stop sign and hit a sport utility vehicle in Kaimuki.

Dallas Arias died at a hospital after the 8:42 p.m. crash at 7th and Kilauea avenues, police said.

The 21-year-old male driver of the car was arrested for negligent homicide and on an outstanding warrant.

Police said the car was traveling makai on 7th Avenue when it entered Kilauea and broadsided the SUV. The crash forced the SUV to veer off the road, hitting two cars parked in a driveway on Kilauea Avenue.

Arias was not wearing a seat belt, police said. The 52-year-old woman driving the SUV was not injured.

Police said Arias was the 32nd traffic fatality of the year, compared with 24 last year.

Police car, lights and siren on, is struck by Toyota

A police car with its blue lights and siren on was struck yesterday by a four-door Toyota Corolla sedan downtown.

The officer was responding to a weapons offense call at Aala Park when his patrol car was struck by the Toyota at 9:35 a.m.

The patrol car was westbound on South Hotel Street, inching through the Bishop Street intersection, when the Toyota, driven by a 28-year-old man, struck it, police said.

Another police officer cited the Toyota driver for failure to yield to an emergency vehicle. No one was injured.

Fire scorches 100 acres near golf course on Kauai

A brush fire burned 100 acres of pastureland yesterday along Puu Road near the Kukuiolono Golf Course on Kauai.

Firefighters brought the Kalaheo blaze under control at 2:39 p.m., fire officials said. No one was injured.

Eight fire units as well as the department's helicopter responded to the 11:35 a.m. blaze.

Goodfellow Bros. Inc. also assisted with three water tankers. The Kauai Coffee Co. also helped with its water tanker and loader.
