Neutering does not change personality

Question: My parents keep telling me to neuter my dog. Will it change his personality?

Answer: We humanize dogs by assigning them personalities, but truly, neutering a male dog won't make him feel less of a male. Macho just isn't part of a dog's psyche. It might make him less likely to roam from home and less likely to fixate on females in heat. It can also reduce tendencies towards aggression. Neutered dogs live longer, healthier lives as neutering eliminates certain cancers. Best of all, he won't be a contributor to Oahu's growing pet overpopulation problem.
